Bowel Cancer Screening & Gut Inflammation Test

About This Test
A 2-in-1combined test for Bowel Cancer Screening Test and Gut Inflammation
This test looks for a specific type of blood in your stool which helps identify if you have any polyps (pre-cancerous growths) in your colon which may indicate Bowel Cancer. It also looks at a protein called Calprotectin which is present in the faeces when intestinal inflammation occurs. Calprotectin levels are significantly elevated in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Early diagnosis and treatment for both Bowel Cancer and IBD are crucial to prevent further complications.
Why take this test?
Because the symptoms of Bowel Cancer and gut inflammatory conditions and diseases can be very similar, this 2-in-1 combined test can test if you may have a gut inflammation condition as well as screen for Bowel Cancer from the same faecal sample.
What are the symptoms of Bowel Cancer and IBD?
Symptoms of IBD include urgent and frequent diarrhoea (often with blood), abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. These are also symptoms of Bowel Cancer.

Bowel Cancer Information
Bowel cancer is a general term that specifically refers to cancer anywhere in the large bowel, which includes both the colon and rectum (back passage). It's one of the most common types of cancer in the UK with 46 deaths every day. This makes bowel cancer the second biggest cancer killer in the UK, too often because it is detected at a late stage. In the UK, nearly 120 people every day are sadly told that they have Bowel Cancer, but 54% of these cases are preventable and survival rates are greatly improved with early diagnosis. The risk of bowel cancer rises steeply from around the age of 50–54 years. Regular FIT screening tests are the most accurate screening tests for Bowel Cancer
What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the colon and small intestine. IBD is an autoimmune disease. This means the body’s own immune system attacks parts of the digestive system resulting in chronic inflammation of gut.
The major types of IBD are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative colitis only affects the colon (large intestine), while Crohn’s disease can affect the entire digestive system, from the mouth to the anus.
IBD symptoms can often present as early as 10 years before diagnosis. Although on-set can be at any age, IBD is usually diagnosed in people in their late teens or early 20s, with a peak diagnosis between 15 – 40 years.
What is Calprotectin?
Calprotectin is a protein biomarker that is present in the faeces when intestinal inflammation occurs. Calprotectin levels are significantly elevated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and therefore it is recommended by the UK Health Watchdog, NICE, as a reliable non-invasive test to rule out IBD and to avoid the need for patients IBS to go through endoscopy.
